Mucinex DM combines an expectorant to loosen mucus with a cough suppressant. The extended-release tablet is intended for cough and chest congestion, with a 12-hour dosing interval.

Uses
Helps loosen phlegm and thin bronchial secretions, and temporarily reduces cough due to minor throat or bronchial irritation.
How to use
For ages 12 and older: regular DM, 1–2 tablets every 12 hours, maximum 4 tablets in 24 hours; Maximum Strength DM, 1 tablet every 12 hours, maximum 2 tablets in 24 hours. Swallow whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break. Under 12: do not use.
Important precautions
Do not use while taking an MAOI or within 2 weeks of stopping one. Ask a doctor for a persistent or chronic cough or one with excessive mucus. Stop and seek advice if cough lasts over 7 days, returns, or occurs with fever, rash, or persistent headache. Check other cough medicines for duplicate ingredients.
Is DM the same as plain Mucinex?
No. DM adds dextromethorphan for cough suppression. Plain guaifenesin products loosen mucus without that added cough suppressant. Choose by ingredients and symptoms, not only the brand name.
