Nexium 24HR 20 mg: Why Heartburn Relief Is Not Immediate

Published Published by Starside Drugs

Nexium 24HR is not intended for immediate heartburn relief. This article covers U.S. OTC esomeprazole 20 mg delayed-release capsules for adults with frequent heartburn occurring at least 2 days a week.

How long does it take?

It is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid production. It may take 1–4 days for full effect. Do not increase the dose because discomfort persists on the first day.

What does the label direct?

Adults 18 years and older: swallow 1 capsule whole with a glass of water before eating in the morning, once every 24 hours for 14 consecutive days. Do not crush or chew, and do not exceed 1 capsule daily. Those under 18 should ask a doctor. Without medical direction, do not use for longer than 14 days or repeat a course more often than every 4 months.

Which symptoms need evaluation first?

Difficulty or pain swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, or chest pain with shortness of breath, sweating or dizziness should not be self-treated as ordinary heartburn; seek prompt medical care. Heartburn lasting more than 3 months, unexplained weight loss or persistent stomach pain also warrants assessment first.

Ask first if you take prescription medicines or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Stop and ask a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen, you need a longer course, or diarrhea, a rash or joint pain develops. Do not use if allergic to esomeprazole.

Starside Drugs perspective: Distinguish occasional from frequent heartburn before choosing a medicine. Treating a course-based medicine as instant relief can lead to inappropriate extra doses.
