Imodium A-D 2 mg: Diarrhea Dosing and Important Warnings

Published Published by Starside Drugs

Not every episode of diarrhea should immediately be treated with an antidiarrheal. This article covers U.S. Imodium A-D caplets containing loperamide hydrochloride 2 mg each, not combination or liquid products.

What does it do?

Loperamide slows intestinal movement to help control diarrhea symptoms, including travelers' diarrhea. It does not replace assessment of the cause. Replacing fluids and preventing dehydration are also important.

What is the labeled adult dose?

Adults and children 12 years and older: take 2 caplets after the first loose stool, then 1 caplet after each subsequent loose stool. Do not take more than 4 caplets in 24 hours. Do not substitute prescription dosing or double the dose. For children under 12, check the exact package's age and weight chart; this article does not provide individualized pediatric doses.

When should you not self-treat?

Do not use for bloody or black stools. Ask a doctor first if you have fever, mucus in the stool, liver disease or a history of abnormal heart rhythm. Check first if you take prescription medicines or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Taking more than directed can cause serious heart problems or death.

When should you stop?

Stop and ask a doctor if diarrhea lasts more than 2 days, symptoms worsen or abdominal swelling develops. Seek timely care for severe abdominal pain, marked dehydration or inability to replace fluids. Do not repeatedly suppress symptoms while delaying care. Drowsiness or dizziness can occur; use caution when driving.

Starside Drugs perspective: Check warning signs before treating diarrhea. Fewer bowel movements do not mean the underlying cause is resolved.
