Anti-inflammatory drugs ≠ antibiotics!
Let’s first talk about the difference between inflammation and infection. Inflammation is a defensive response triggered when a local part of the body is irritated, with a large release of inflammatory factors locally, leading to redness, swelling, heat, and pain. Infection specifically refers to inflammation caused by the invasion of bacteria, viruses, or fungi. So while infection can cause inflammation, inflammation does not always mean there is an infection. For example, if your arm is cut and you develop redness, swelling, heat, and pain, that is inflammation but not an infection.
What are anti-inflammatory drugs?

Anti-inflammatory drugs = pain relievers = fever reducers = swelling reducers

Over-the-counter options include ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.), Bayer’s naproxen Aleve, Voltaren (topical), aspirin, Fenbid, flurbiprofen, and ketoprofen—these are all NSAID anti-inflammatory drugs, meaning non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications! These drugs are not addictive and let you live a comfortable, pain-free life. They can reduce fever, swelling, and pain, but they cannot kill bacteria. Patients with stomach ulcers or kidney impairment should consult a doctor before taking them.

Anti-inflammatory drugs are not what most people think: amoxicillin, cephalosporins, azithromycin, erythromycin, levofloxacin and other fluoroquinolone drugs are all antibiotics.

Antibiotics target bacteria, not viruses, fungi, or inflammation itself. Antibiotics relieve inflammatory reactions by killing or inhibiting bacteria. Some people want to use antibiotics to reduce inflammation and treat illness as soon as they see redness, swelling, heat, or pain—believing antibiotics are a cure-all. In fact, antibiotics are not anti-inflammatory drugs. Very often, fever, sore throat, and runny nose are caused by viral infections, and antibiotics will not work. That is why oral antibiotics in the United States are prescription-only medications that must be used under a doctor’s guidance for the specific condition, following the correct dosage and treatment course. Misusing antibiotics can cause intestinal flora imbalance, diarrhea, antibiotic resistance and other harms.

So when your body has redness, swelling, heat, or pain, the first step is to determine whether it is inflammation or an infection; if it is an infection, you need to identify whether it is caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Almost all drugs have some toxic and side effects while supporting health. Taking the right medication for your condition under a doctor’s guidance is the most effective and safe principle for medication use.

Many people treat antibiotics as a "wonder drug", believing that whether it is a headache, fever, sore throat, or runny nose, as long as the body has inflammatory reactions like redness, swelling, heat, or pain, antibiotics can be used to reduce inflammation and treat the condition. But in fact, they are not anti-inflammatory drugs.

Instead, anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen are the "proper" drugs for reducing inflammation.

7 Things You Should Know About Ibuprofen, an Anti-Inflammatory Drug

▍1. Ibuprofen Only Reduces Redness, Heat, Swelling, and Pain—It Does Not Treat the Underlying Condition!

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory drug that can eliminate symptoms like "redness, heat, swelling, and pain". Remember, these symptoms are just that—symptoms, not diseases. So ibuprofen only treats the symptoms, not the root cause.

▍2. Ibuprofen Does Not Kill Bacteria!

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory drug, but it does not kill bacteria. Not all inflammation is caused by bacteria, but bacteria can definitely cause inflammation.

Amoxicillin, cephalosporins, azithromycin, and fluoroquinolones are all antibacterial agents—they cannot directly reduce inflammation.

Only drugs like ibuprofen and aspirin can directly block inflammation!

▍3. Situations Where You Can Take Ibuprofen!

Fever, menstrual cramps, gout, headaches, joint pain, toothache... ibuprofen can relieve all of these symptoms.

You can take ibuprofen for fever. You can also take ibuprofen when you do not have a fever, but you need to be clear about why you are taking it:

① No fever: to relieve pain and reduce inflammation;

② Low-grade fever: ibuprofen is used to relieve muscle and bone soreness associated with low-grade fever;

③ High fever: ibuprofen is used to reduce fever.

Patients who are allergic to ibuprofen, or who have stomach or digestive tract ulcers, can use acetaminophen instead to reduce fever and relieve pain.

You can take ibuprofen at any time when you have symptoms, and skip it when you have no symptoms.

But you cannot take antibacterial agents this way. Antibiotics require a full treatment course, usually 6 to 7 days, and you must finish the full course! The only exception is azithromycin, which can be taken for 3 to 5 days. Most other antibacterial treatments last 6 to 7 days or even longer! You absolutely cannot stop taking antibiotics today just because you feel better tomorrow—even if you feel fully recovered, you must finish the entire treatment course!

▍4. Ibuprofen is for Adults; Children Use Children’s Motrin

Ibuprofen is formulated for adults; the brand name for children’s ibuprofen is Children’s Motrin.

Children should not take adult ibuprofen tablets or capsules, but adults can take children’s Motrin in an emergency, although they will need to drink a large amount of the liquid.

The standard adult dosage of ibuprofen is 400 or 600 mg per dose. The maximum daily dose is 2400 mg, meaning if you take 600 mg per dose, you can take a maximum of 4 doses per day, ideally with 6 to 8 hours between each dose. Choose the specific dosage based on your inflammatory symptoms.

▍5. Ibuprofen Is Not Addictive!

Ibuprofen is not addictive; addictive pain relievers are morphine-like drugs!

Ibuprofen, aspirin, Fenbid, and Voltaren are all anti-inflammatory drugs, all pain relievers, and none are addictive!

▍6. Extended-Release Tablets Cannot Be Taken in Increased Doses!

Fenbid is a brand name; its active ingredient is also ibuprofen, and it is an extended-release tablet. This means it releases slowly into the body, with each tablet containing 300 mg of ibuprofen for gradual release.

But you cannot take two tablets at once to reach a 600 mg dose with this extended-release medication. You can only take one tablet at a time, with a maximum of two doses per day.

▍7. Ibuprofen Should Be Taken After Meals!

The most common side effect of ibuprofen is stomach irritation. That is why it is recommended to take it after meals!

Long-term use of ibuprofen can cause kidney problems in older adults, so drink plenty of water and avoid long-term use whenever possible, especially for seniors.
